WASHINGTON, D.C. ? Georgetown University senior Rebekkah Brunson (Oxon Hill, Md./Oxon Hill) has been named to the Wooden Women?s Basketball Award Preseason All-American Team. The honor, which recognizes the nation?s top 30 players, was determined by voting of the sports media and women?s college basketball experts from across the nation.
The Women?s John R. Wooden Award, in its inaugural year, will be presented annually to the most outstanding female collegiate basketball player. The women?s award is the counterpart to the longstanding men?s award, which is widely recognized as the most coveted individual honor in college basketball.
Brunson was one of only five players selected from the BIG EAST. Last season she led the Hoyas in scoring (16.6) and rebounding (10.7), and posted the best rebounding average in the BIG EAST. She was tied for the league lead in double-doubles with 16, and was an All-BIG EAST First Team selection and All-American Honorable Mention.
This summer Brunson was selected to represent the United States at the Pan American Games. Team USA finished the Pan Am tournament with a 5-2 record and a silver medal, and Brunson led the team in points scored, rebounding and blocked shots. She averaged 11.3 ppg. and 5.6 rpg, and with a tournament total of 39 rebounds, ranked fourth all-time in rebounding by a USA player in the Pan Am games. Additionally, her six blocks ranks her second on the list. Brunson played and started in all seven games and averaged 21.1 mpg.
