WASHINGTON, D.C.--On Sunday October 10, 2004 the Georgetown University Sailing Team held a reception at the Larchmont Yacht Club. The event was sponsored by the Friends of Georgetown Sailing. Over 50 alums, parents, current sailors and Coach Callahan were on hand to celebrate the teams victory at the Intercollegiate Offshore Sailing Regatta held over the weekend. Those in attendance included Sailing Team founder Martin Quigley '39 and his wife Katherine.
Dr.Quigley spoke of how the Sailing Team was formed in 1937 and how the first fleet of five boats was purchased for a total of $1,000. Dr. Quigley likened the founding of the Sailing Team in 1937 to throwing a "pebble in a pond" with the pebble creating a "tidal wave" that has ended up with Georgetown Sailing being the most successful team at Georgetown. Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Georgetown Ed Villani '68 and wife Cynthia were also on hand to meet parents and sailors. Mr. Villani spoke to the group about how impressed he was with the Sailing Team and spoke of the need to better publicize the teams successes. Peter Kelly '69, Commodore of the Larchmont Yacht Club and captain of the sailing team while at Georgetown, spoke about his years on the team and remarked about how happy he was to see the team doing so well.
The reception was sponsored by the Friends of Georgetown Sailing. The Friends of Georgetown Sailing consists on Alumni, Parents, and Friends of the Sailing Program who are committed to improving the financial support given to the Sailing Team.
