WASHINGTON, D.C. ?The Georgetown University men?s soccer team (8-7-1, 4-4-1) played the #12 ranked Boston College Eagles (10-3-1, 6-3-1) to a 1-1 tie after narrowly escaping defeat at the end of regulation. Trailing 1-0 with time running out, Trevor Goodrich (Sr., Palo Alto, Calif./ Palo Alto) crossed the ball to Ricky Schramm (So., East Chester, N.Y./ Fordham Prep), who found Jeff Curtin (Jr., Oreland, Pa./ Germantown Academy) in front of the BC goal. Curtin put it in the net with a mere 18 seconds remaining in the game, forcing overtime. Both teams came up empty in the two golden goal periods, and the tie was never broken.
The game started of slowly, with neither team putting a shot on goal in the first half. Although they never put a true shot on goal in the entire game, the Eagles managed to strike first in the second half. With 17 minutes remaining in the game, BC?s Jarryd Goldberg took a corner kick that sailed into a host of players in front of the goal. As the teams jostled for position, the ball struck a Hoya defender and bounced into the goal.
After the Hoyas tied the game in the waning seconds of regulation, the Hoyas maintained their momentum into the overtime period. The Hoyas had several scoring opportunities on corner kicks and throw-ins near the baseline, including near misses on headers by Curtin and senior Brent Plumley (Holden, Mass./Wachusett Regional).
Georgetown outshot BC by a 24-10 margin, and the Hoyas put five shots on goal to the Eagles? one. Both teams played a physical game, with Georgetown committing 23 fouls and picking up one yellow card and Boston College committing 13 fouls and two yellow cards.
The Hoyas will face the Navy Midshipmen in their next contest, scheduled for 2 p.m. on Tuesday, October 26
th on North Kehoe Field.
