PITTSBURGH ? The Georgetown women?s volleyball team fought valiantly, but it was not enough to prevent the Pittsburgh Panthers from earning a 3-0 (31-29, 31-29, 30-28) victory over the Hoyas in BIG EAST women?s volleyball action at Fitzgerald Field House on Saturday, October 23. It marked the fifth-straight win for Pittsburgh (15-5/3-0 BIG EAST). Georgetown falls to 13-9 and 1-3 in BIG EAST play.
The Panthers (15-5, 3-0 BIG EAST) won the first and final sets by identical scores of 30-28 and won the second game by a score of 31-29 for their third consecutive sweep of an opponent. Sara Albert (Sr., Davis, Calif./Davis) and Jenny Weed (Salt Lake City, Utah/Utah Valley College) led the Hoyas with 10 kills apiece. Albert also hit .400 for the match and recorded a match-high six blocks, while Weed contributed four blocks defensively. Three Panthers had 14 kills apiece, including senior Megan Miller, junior Gini Ullery and freshman Diana Andreyko.
Kate Fisher (Fr., Menlo Park, Calif./Menlo) started the match at setter, registering 24 assists and 13 digs. Margaret Vernon (Sr., Denver, Colo./Kent Denver School) came off the bench to provide 18 assists and four digs. Annie Connor (Jr., Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis) tallied eight kills, four blocks and a .571 hitting percentage, while Ashley Lancaster (Jr., Huntsville, Ala./Huntsville) posted six kills, 12 digs and two blocks for the match. Rachel Nelson (Jr., Sacramento, Calif./St. Francis) added six kills and five digs, and Kate Nulty (Fr., Santa Barbara, Calif./Laguna Blanca) 13 digs from the libero position. Jessica George (So., Kennett Square, Pa./Kennett) chipped in three kills, three blocks and three assists, and Patty Carroll (Fr., Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South) notched five kills and four digs in the losing effort.
