Campbell Wins ICSA Men's Singlehanded National Championship

10/25/2004

WASHINGTON, D.C.?Georgetown University?s sailor Andrew Campbell (San Diego, Calif./ The Bishop?s School) has won the ICSA Men's Singlehanded National Championship for the second time in his career. The Championship was held at the Wayzata Yacht Club in Wayzata, MN, and sailed on Lake Minnetonka.

Campbell dominated the regatta from start to finish, finishing in the top three in 15 of 16 races. His 36 point win is one of the largest margins of victory ever at this regatta.  Campbell had a 28 point lead going into the last two races, yet he still won both races in convincing fashion.  He is now only the third sailor to win this regatta more than once - joining Gary Jobson (SUNY Maritime 72-73) and Alec Cutler (Navy 86-87).  Campbell has a chance to become the first person to win the regatta three times when he tries to defend his win next year in Hawaii.   By virtue of winning this event, Campbell was selected to be the U.S. representative in Sailing to the 2005 World University Games held Aug 11-25, 2005 in Izmir, Turkey.  This marks the third time that the Georgetown University Sailing Team has won a National Championship - 2001 ICSA Team Racing National Champions, 2002 ICSA Men's Singlehanded National Champion.

Georgetown sailing will next travel to the Harvard Women?s Intersectional held at Harvard, the War Memorial held at Navy, and the Princeton Women?s Fall Open held at Princeton over the weekend of October 30-31.
