Washington, DC - The Georgetown University women?s volleyball team made it three victories in a row with a gutsy 3-2 (30-27, 30-22, 26-30, 22-30, 15-10) victory over cross-town rival George Washington University on Tuesday, October 5, at the Smith Center on the GW campus. The win improved the Hoyas? overall record to 11-6 on the season and gave Georgetown Head Coach Li Liu, a former GW standout, a victory over her alma mater. The Colonials fall to 4-10 on the year.
Georgetown looked in control of the match after winning the first two games of the night, but George Washington rebounded in the fourth stanza to even the score at 2-2. The Hoyas came out strong in the decisive fifth game, hitting .385 on eight kills with three errors in 13 attempts. The Colonials managed just .063 for game three.
Leading the way offensively for the Hoyas was Ashley Lancaster (Huntsville, Ala./Huntsville), who tallied a season and match-high 21 kills. The senior outside hitter also provided 15 digs, a block and an ace. Senior middle blocker Sara Albert (Davis, Calif./Davis) notched a team-high six blocks to go with 12 kills and three digs, while freshman outside hitter Patty Carroll (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South) turned in a double-double performance with a team-high 18 digs and 10 kills. Opposite side hitter Jenny Weed (Salt Lake City, Utah/Utah Valley College) tied Albert in blocks with six. In addition, the junior transfer had eight kills and three assists.
Freshman Kate Fisher (Menlo, Calif./Menlo) and senior Margaret Vernon (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver School) split GU?s setting duties for the match. Fisher ended the evening with 30 assists and nine digs, and Vernon finished with 28 assists, four digs and two aces.
Sophomores Jessica George (Kennett Square, Pa./Kennett) and Annie Connor (Sacramento, Calif./St. Francis) also provided solid play for the Hoyas. George had eight kills, two digs and a block; and Conner seven kills and two blocks. Freshman Katie Nulty (Santa Barbara, Calif./Laguna Blanca), playing the libero position, wrapped up the match with 16 digs.
Senior Molly Law led George Washington with 14 kills and nine digs, while sophomore Juliene McLaughlin registered 11 kills and 11 digs.
The win, Georgetown?s third in a row, gives the Hoyas good momentum heading into the BIG EAST portion of the schedule. Georgetown will begin conference play on Saturday, October 9, when the team travels to Boston, Mass., to take on the Boston College Eagles at 2:00 p.m.
