Swimming and Diving Defeats Fairfield and Providence

WASHINGTON, D.C.-- The Georgetown University swimming and diving team competed at a dual meet held at Fairfield on October 30. The women defeated both Fairfield and Providence by scores of 68-45, and 80-33 respectively. The men were also successful, as they defeated Providence by a score of 94-21, and Fairfield by a score of 68-45.

The women had a strong team showing, as five swimmers had first place finishes as well as a first place finish in the 400 medley relay. In the 800m freestyle, the Hoyas placed two in the top three with Kelcey Poulson (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich High) claiming victory in 9:27.56, and Cori Raffaelli (Oxnard, Calif./Ventura College) placing third just a second behind in 9:28.28. Junior Katie Amaro (Shreveport, La./Loyola Prep) placed first in the 200m freestyle in 2:12.78. Freshman Caitlin Colling (Monson, Mass./ Monson High) finished first in the 50m freestyle and the 100m freestyle with times of 28.27 and 1:01.20 respectively. Liz Nugent (Westport, Conn./The Hopkins School) and Claire Nugent (Westport, Conn./The Hopkins School) had successful days: finishing first in 100m Backstroke (1:10.12) and second place finish in the 100m Butterfly (1:08.93), respectively. The 400 medley relay team of L. Nugent, Corie Rhodes (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West), C. Nugent, and Colling placed first with a time of 4:34.89.

The men also had strong showings from many swimmers on the squad. In the 800m freestyle, junior Jon Hayden (Woodbridge, Va./Osbourn Park) finished first in 9:10.69 followed closely by Kevin Rieffel (Ambler, Pa./La Salle College High) in 9:13.45. Hayden and Rieffel had another 1-2 finish in the 400m freestyle with times of 4:27.44 and 4:28.15. Heath Walden (Scituate, Mass./Boston College High) finished first in the 200m freestyle (2:02.28) and second in the 100m backstroke (1:20.98). Senior Michael Bayer (West Chester, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) placed first in the 50m free with a time of 24.66. Senior Kevin Walsh (Bethesda, Md./Saint Anslems) paced the Hoyas with two first place finishes in the 100m butterfly (1:01.73) and the 200m IM (2:18.49). Freshman Chris Ball (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) finished second for the Hoyas in the 100m freestyle (56.19).

In the men?s diving events Doug Curran (St. Louis, Mo.) placed second in the 3 meter (183.40) and third in the 1 meter (179.55). Alan Fong (San Rafael, Calif.) finished third in the 3 meter diving (172.25) while Santini Reali (Sarasota, Fla.) placed second in the 1 meter.

Kelcey Moore (Arlington, Va./ The Maderia School) and Katie Oldham (Verdi, Nv./ McQueen High) represented the Hoyas in the women?s diving. Moore placed first in the 3 meter diving (172.95) and second in the 1 meter (195.82). Oldham placed fourth in the 1 meter (175.05) and third in the 3 meter (172.95).

The Hoyas will host Georgia Southern and St. Francis (Pa.) on Saturday November 6 at 1 p.m. The meet will be held in Yates Field House.
