Women Place Second at NEC Championship

LANDOVER, Md. ? The Georgetown Swimming and Diving program claimed the men?s Northeast Conference Championship, while the women placed second, this weekend at the Prince George?s Sports and Learning Center in Landover, Md. The Hoyas? swimming and diving program is in their first season as associate members of the NEC.   

The Georgetown men scored 760.5 points to win the title, outdistancing second place finisher Virginia Military Institute, which scored 728.5 points.  After leading for the first two days, Florida A&M finished the meet in third place with 708 points.

The Hoyas? Kevin Walsh (Bethesda, Md./ Saint Anselms) took home two gold medals over the weekend with a win in the 400 yard individual medley (4:18.46) on Saturday and another in the 200 yard butterfly (1:56.91) on Sunday. Other first-place finishers on the men?s side included sophomore Nick Libertiny (South Salem, N.Y./ John Jay) in the 200yd individual medley (1:58.40), freshman Josh Bair (Albuquerque, N.M./ Albuquerque Academy) in the 200yd freestyle (1:46.80) and the men?s 800yd freestyle relay (7:15.49). 

Gardner-Webb claimed the championship on the women?s side, scoring 611 points to Georgetown?s 534, which earned the Hoyas runner-up honors. Central Connecticut State University and Georgia Southern tied for third place with 474 points each, while Wagner rounded out the top five team finishers with 416 points.

Sophomore Katie Amaro (Shreveport, La./ Loyola Prep) took the gold in the 1,650yd freestyle (17:27.50) and senior Juliana Bonilla (West Covina, Calif./ Covina) won the three-meter diving competition (422.65) to highlight Georgetown?s individual finishers on the weekend. Amaro also placed second in the 500yd freestyle, third in the 200yd freestyle, and joined senior Colleen Newman (Staten Island, N.Y./ Notre Dame), and sophomores Cori Rafaelli (Oxnard, Calif./ Ventura College) and Eileen Sytnyk (Nutley, N.J./ Mount St. Dominic) to place third in the 800yd freestyle relay. Senior Kathryn Harrison (Morristown, N.J./ The Hotchkiss School) added a second-place finish (248.25) in the one-meter and a fourth-place finish (409.70) in the three-meter diving competitions.

Amaro's times in the 200yd freestyle (1:54.53), 1,650yd freestyle (17:27.50), as well as her 1,000yd split in the 1,650yd event were all school records. Her second place finish in the 500yd freestyle comes after her swimming the event the previous day at the BIG EAST Championships, as well as earlier the same day in the preliminaries. 

The Hoyas will next compete at the ECAC Championships on Feb. 27-29.
