WASHINGTON, D.C. ? Georgetown?s women?s tennis team went 1-1 on the weekend, defeating local rival George Mason on Saturday night, then dropping a 7-0 decision to BIG EAST foe West Virginia on Sunday afternoon. Both matches were played indoors at the Army Navy Country Club in Arlington, Virginia.
On Saturday, the Hoyas began the match against George Mason by sweeping the three matches in the doubles competition. Hoya #1 doubles Jordan Botjer (Miami, Fla./ Ransom Everglades) and Lara Madonia (Ramsey, N.J./ Immaculate Heart Academy) took an early lead and cruised to an 8-4 victory. The Hoyas #3 tandem of Eileen Boyle (Burr Ridge, Ill./ St. Ignatius Prep (Chicago)) and Nora Gardner (Greenwich, Conn./ Deerfield Academy (Mass.)) got off to a great start, taking a 6-0 on their way to an 8-4 victory. The doubles sweep was realized when the #2 tandem of Kristin Dew (Nashville, Tenn.) and Sana Malouf (McLean, Va./ St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) overturned a 4-1 deficit to win their match 9-7.
Solid singles play followed the solid doubles play. Georgetown captured the first three singles matches to finish and in doing so compiled the four-team points necessary to win the overall match. Malouf, Dew and Boyle won in straight sets. Three set victories were turned in by Gardner at #4 singles and Botjer at #1 singles. The final score was Georgetown-6, George Mason-1.
On Sunday, the Hoya women competed hard but fell to West Virginia in a tough battle 7-0 on Sunday at Army Navy Country Club. All Hoya players played well in singles with freshman Gardner (#4) and sophomore Dew (#5) losing close first sets 6-4 each.
The match of the day pitted Georgetown's senior co-captain Botjer and West Virginia's Melissa Day at #1 singles. Although Day eventually won the match, Botjer showed great resolve and poise competing down to the wire before dropping a heartbreaker 6-3, 3-6, 7-5. The match featured great momentum shifts with Botjer winning the second set and coming back from 0-3 down in the third set before losing in the nearly 2 1/2 hour contest.
The Lady Hoyas will travel to UMBC on Thursday, March 18 at 2 p.m. The Lady Hoyas' next home match will be on Saturday, March 20 against Villanova.
