CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College won a 71-60 contest against BIG EAST opponent Georgetown in the final home game for each at Conte Forum.
The host Eagles mounted leads of eight and nine at different points in the first half, but Georgetown used runs of its own and the two teams went into the break with the Eagles in front, 30-29. Maureen Leahy sparked a run early in the first half scoring six of eight-straight points for BC. She led all scorers with 12 in the first half.
Boston College (21-6, 11-5), who never trailed in the contest, opened up the second half with a 12-3 run to build a 10-point lead, 42-32, with 15:30 left to play. The two teams traded baskets the rest of the way.
Georgetown (13-14, 7-9) cut the lead to six on a Sarah Jenkins (Sr., Bowie, Md./Riverdale Baptist (Maryland)) three-pointer with 4:41 on the clock, but BC regained the momentum recording three-consecutive offensive rebounds to take 1:34 off the clock. The Hoyas, led by Rebekkah Brunson (Sr., Oxon Hill, Md./ Oxon Hill) - 18 points, 13 rebounds - would get as close as five, but the Eagles hit 7-of-9 free throws in the final minute of play to secure the victory.
BC's Jessalyn Deveny led all scorers with 19 points.
With the loss, Georgetown became the No. 9 seed in the 2004 BIG EAST Tournament. The Hoyas will face 8th-seed Virginia Tech in first round action at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 6 at the Hartford Civic Center.
