The Georgetown University Sailing Team competed in four regattas last weekend, winning the Southern New England Team Race at Connecticut College, placing second at the MAISA Team Race Challenge, and finishing in the top five at the MAISA/SAISA at Hampton University and the Owen Trophy at Brown.

The Hoyas finished 19-0 against the competition at this Team Race intersectional. The regatta was sailed in the Thames River in New London, Conn., and the breeze conditions varied from a light 3-5 SW on Saturday to a brisk NE 15-25 on Sunday. The Hoyas sailed extremely well both days and were never really challenged in any race.

The MAISA/SAISA was a good test for Georgetown?s younger skippers. Both divisions faired well and were able to stay near the top of the fleet in every race.

Owen Trophy @ Brown
A div. 5th w/ 43 points Steve Streit / Megan O'Neill
B div. 10th w/ 64 points JB Turney / Colleen Hehir
The Owen Trophy was a one day regatta (second day canceled due to high winds) and the Hoyas were just a little too inconsistent to win the event. The A division team sailed well and were just a few points out of first in their division. In B division freshman JB Turney made some mistakes but with the help of his senior crew Colleen Hehir the pair managed some decent races and would have moved up in the scores had there been racing on Sunday.

MAISA Team Race Challenge @ Navy

The Hoyas sent a group of sophomore sailors to the Team Race Challenge at Navy. This was a great practice event for the Hoyas and our sophomores learned a lot and were able to beat the top teams from a number of schools.

This weekend the Hoyas will be hosting their first annual Parents Regatta, where parents will race as skipper or crew with their children. On Sunday the Hoyas? top team race team will scrimmage with a number of alumni including most of the 2001 Team Race National Championship Team.
The Georgetown sailing program will also receive three new 420's for their fleet courtesy of donations from parents. The new 420's will give the Hoyas a total of 20 FJ's and 6 420's.
