8/11/2004
The 2004 Hoyas are entering the 51st season of Georgetown soccer on the Hilltop with a veteran squad. Seven seniors and six juniors will look to reemerge as one of the top programs in the East. The Hoyas enter the year healthy and loaded with talent. With two All BIG EAST players in Dan Gargan and Jeff Curtin surrounded by mature and experienced teammates the Hoyas plan to be a contender again in the BIG EAST.
?A couple of years back we were saying that the success of our team would hinge on how short a learning curve we would go through due to being so young. Well we have matured a lot and this team should show that, beginning with the very first game all the way through the playoffs.?
Head Coach Keith Tabatznik
Schedule
?A schedule as exciting as ours gives us a great opportunity to prove ourselves as a team deserving of post-season play. The BIG EAST conference games alone make an incredible schedule. Add the likes of Maryland, Penn State and American and you have one of the toughest schedules in the country.?
Head Coach Keith Tabatznik
The first victory of 2004 will mark the 200th of Head Coach Keith Tabatznik?s career. The initial opportunity to crack the 200-win barrier will come against Delaware. After the opener Georgetown enters the D.C. College Cup as the defending champion. Cross-town rivals GW and American will provide the roadblocks in repeating as Cup champions. Another tournament is right on the heels of the D.C. College Cup as GU will participate in the University of Maryland Tournament and face Penn State and nationally ranked Maryland. The BIG EAST portion of the schedule then sneaks up on the Hoyas with the conference opener at Notre Dame. National power St. John?s highlights the home docket with a visit to D.C. in late September. Georgetown will host nine matches including four straight to end the regular season. A berth in the BIG EAST Championship will hinge on conference play and the early season tests should provide the necessary experience to propel Georgetown back into the BIG EAST fray and into NCAA Championship contention.
Midfield
?We have one of the best midfields in many years. Experience is a big factor in making this group a tough unit. All our midfielders have the ability to play both ends of the field with a focus that will make us a top team.?
Head Coach Keith Tabatznik
A strong returning midfield gets even more powerful in 2004 with experience and added talent. Senior Dan Gargan retakes the field for the second consecutive season as a team captain. Gargan was a 2003 All-BIG EAST Third Team member and the team?s MVP. He had five goals and six assists last season and is one of the East?s top midfielders. Gargan will team up with fellow captain and senior Kevin Sindelar. Sindelar missed all of the 2003 season with a leg injury but is fully healed for 2004. He is one of Georgetown?s most dynamic players and will be an imposing presence beside Gargan. Senior Trevor Goodrich and sophomore Dan Grasso should fill two more midfield slots. Goodrich has played in 55 games as a Hoya and started in 18 games in 2003. He is very dangerous out wide and provides excellent crosses into the box. Grasso became a go-to Hoya last season getting the start in 10 games. He was the team?s Rookie of the Year after netting three goals and three assists. Grasso takes care of the ball and can break down the defense. Junior Dan Pydo has been a key contributor the past two seasons, starting 33 games. Pydo is an aggressive defender and became an offensive threat last year with four goals and three assists. Two juniors, Danny McAnally and Ethan Caskey, will be key components in 2004. McAnally is a versatile player who played in 18 games last year and hit his career first goal against Villanova. Caskey also saw time in 18 contests and proved to be a consistent contributor. Chris Putko, a speedy sophomore, saw limited action last year but could see more time this year. The lone freshman midfielder, Max Blume, will look for time in 2004 and possesses quick feet and a good feel for the game.

Defense
?Depth, size and speed are all mixed into our backs this year. We have a group of excellent defenders with a great ability to get forward as well.?
Head Coach Keith Tabatznik
The back line will be a building block again this season. The anchor of the line, Jeff Curtin, suits up for year number three. Curtin, a 2003 All-BIG EAST Second Team choice and the 2002 BIG EAST Rookie of the Year, will be expected to continue his high level of play. He has become one of the best defensive players in the nation. Senior Paul Brandley closes his career this season. Brandley was a starter in 17 games last year and is one of Georgetown?s best in the air. Tim Convey, a sophomore, emerged last year and started 15 games. He is a strong defender who helps keep the backline organized. Joining the defense in game action for the first time will be senior transfer Brent Plumley. He has seen 35 games of collegiate action at both UMass and UPenn and is one of the Hoyas? fastest players. An extremely improved player is senior Ellery Bledsoe. As a junior last year Bledsoe saw 13 games of action and has become a significant contributor. Two other Hoyas will add to the backline?s depth: freshman Richard Diaz and sophomore Danny Gavula. Diaz is a solid player hailing from Los Angeles. Gavula participated in five games in 2003 and possesses a strong left foot.

Forwards
?Our front line consists of proven collegiate goal scorers. We have depth here and will look to several players to put up significant numbers.?
Head Coach Keith Tabatznik
Georgetown?s starting attack returns this season sophomore Ricky Schramm and senior Kaiser Chowdhry will again suit up on the front line. Feldman was the Hoyas? leading goal scorer as a freshman and netted two-game winning goals last year while battling injuries. He is healthy for 2004 and should be a productive presence on the front line. Last season?s top goal scorer, Schramm, proved he will be a major factor in the BIG EAST. He hit nine goals last season, good for sixth in the BIG EAST rankings. Chowdhry enters his final season on the Hilltop after netting two goals as a junior. He is a powerful player with the ability to change a game. Junior Chris Tansey returns to the line-up after playing 17 games in 2003. Tansey has a strong work ethic and will be counted on this season. Freshman Mike Glaccum will also be a forward for Georgetown. He is a proven scorer tying his high school?s career record with 59 goals. Junior Benjamin Jefferson-Dow has transferred back to Georgetown after spending a year at SMU and will sit this year out.

Goalkeepers
?Andrew had an excellent spring as well as playing well in Spain. Ted joined us in the spring and also performed extremely well on the Spain tour. Together with Joe we have three very capable, athletic keepers with the ability to win games for us.?
Head Coach Keith Tabatznik
An area of inexperience in 2004 will be the Hoya goalkeeper. Only sophomore Andrew Keszler has any collegiate experience, playing in a total of 80 minutes last season. Keszler is the leading candidate to take over starting duties and has a very accomplished high school background. He is imposing between the pipes and had a strong spring season. Two newcomers will battle Keszler for the top billing as sophomore Ted Shanahan and freshman Joe Devine both wear the Blue and Gray for the first time. Shanahan is a very athletic goalkeeper and possesses good size and quickness. Devine is also a big goalkeeper and was one of the top keepers in Pennsylvania last season.
