COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The third-ranked Maryland Terrapins faced its first deficit of the season early against Georgetown, but stormed back to score the game's next three goals and went on to win a 4-2 decision over the Hoyas Sunday afternoon at the Maryland/adidas Classic.
Jason Garey scored a pair of goals and Chris Lancos scored a career-high four points on a goal and two assists to help pace the Terrapins. Abe Thompson score the Terps' other goal and Kenny Bertz chipped in two assists.
The Hoyas (2-3-0) started the game strong controlling possession and creating opportunities. Ricky Schramm (East Chester, N.Y./Fordham Prep School) headed in a cross from Trevor Goodrich (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) at the 7:05 mark to give the Hoyas the early lead.
Georgetown did not let up, keeping the pressure on the Terps. However, Maryland was able to get into its offensive rhythm midway through the first half. The Terps knotted the score at 1-1 when Michael Dello-Russo played the ball ahead on the left side to Thompson who held off a defender and got the shot past goalie Andrew Keszler (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman). The score came at 27:09 in the first half.
Just under 10 minutes later, it was Garey providing the punch for the Terps. Off a corner kick by Dello-Russo, Bertz headed it to the corner of the goal where Lancos got a touch on the ball amidst a crowd in front of the net. The ball got through the crowd to Garey who slid the ball in for the score.
Maryland (4-0) kept the pressure on in the second half, and got some breathing room on a score from Lancos. Bertz's throw-in from close to the touch line went over a group and found Lancos all alone on the far post for the score at 50:08.
Georgetown would rally back, though, getting more offensive looks and more possession midway through the second half. Goodrich's corner kick went to Schramm who settled the ball and fired from 18 yards into the top-right side of the net to cut the Terrapin lead to 3-2.
Garey put the game out of reach in the 68th minute when Lancos played a ball ahead from the midfield. In space, Garey kept pushing toward the end line looking as if he was going to cross it, then fired a shot at a tough angle past Keszler for the score.
The Terrapin defense held Georgetown to just six total shots, but four of those went on goal: two ended up as scores and Noah Palmer tallied saves on the other two. The Hoyas scored on their only shot in the second half. Georgetown's Schramm and Dan Grasso (Burr Ridge, Ill./Hinsdale Central) were named to the all-tournament team for their efforts on the weekend.
Georgetown is one of just two teams to score at least two goals against the Terps in the last two seasons. The Hoyas next foe is Towson in Towson, Md. on Wednesday, September 15, at 4 p.m.
