NOTRE DAME, Ind. ? Georgetown University?s men?s soccer team (3-4-0) was defeated by fifth-ranked University of Notre Dame 4-1 in the BIG EAST Conference opener for both squads on Saturday, Sept. 18 at Alumni Field.
Georgetown found the net first as junior Danny McAnally (Mendham, N.J./Delbarton) drove a cross into the lower left corner from six-yards out on a feed from Ricky Schramm (East Chester, N.Y./Fordham Prep School) and Trevor Goodrich (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) in the 34th minute. The Irish responded just over a minute later when Alex Yoshinaga took a pass from midfielder Greg Dalby and chipped the ball over Hoya keeper Andrew Keszler (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) to knot the score at one in the 35th minute.
The Hoyas held Notre Dame scoreless over the next 37 minutes, but the Irish notched three goals in just over seven minutes of play to put the game away. In the 72nd minute, forward Joe Lapira scored after he took a pass from Brian Murphy. Yoshinaga was heard from again at the 75:53 mark when he netted his second goal of the contest with the assists going to Ian Etherington and Luke Boughen. Junior forward Tony Megna put the capper on the game three minutes later when he took a thru-ball from Etherington to make it 4-1.
The Hoyas, who were outshot 22-5, received strong defensive efforts from Keszler and juniors Jeff Curtin (Oreland, Pa./Germantown Academy) and Dan Pydo (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West).
Georgetown will next face BIG EAST rival St. John?s on Wednesday, Sept. 22 at 3 p.m. on North Kehoe field.
