Georgetown Sailing Wins Two Regattas

WASHINGTON, D.C.--The Georgetown sailing team has gotten the season off to a great start, winning two titles and finishing in the top 10 teams in each of their regattas.

On the weekend of September 25-26, the Hoyas competed in three regattas: the Laser Qualifiers South, the Jesuit Cup, and the Senators Cup. In the Hoyas competed in Laser Qualifiers South, held at Navy. This event was a qualifier for the Men?s Singlehanded District Championships, with the top three finishers qualifying for the MAISA champs. The Hoyas proved to be successful as both Andrew Campbell and Steve Streit. Andrew dominated the event winning 12 of 14 races en route to a 69 point win.  If Andrew or Steve finish in the top 3 at the MAISA Championship they will qualify for the ICSA Singlehanded National Championship held in Wayzata, MN October 22-24.

The Hoyas also competed at the Jesuit Cup, held at Fordham where they won for the third year in a row. In the A division, Georgetown?s Seamus Kraft and Emily Siguler came in first, winning 12 of 14 races.  In the B division, Zach Kavanaugh and Leigh Fogwell finished at the top, winning 13 of 14 races.

At the Senators Cup at St. Mary?s, Georgetown finished ninth, with Berry Kurland and Rickie De Sole finishing 9th, and Kyle Bergeron and Kelly Lanzara finishing 4th in the A and B divisions, respectively.

On the weekend of September 18-19, the Hoyas competed in the Nevins Trophy, Mrs. Hurst Bowl, and the Ocean County Fall Regatta. At the Nevins Trophy, held at Kings point, sailors Steve Streit and Barbara Hall finished first in the A division with 42 points, placing ninth, while Ed duMoulin and JB Turney finished 5th with 30 points in the B division. Andrew Campbell placed 1st in the C division with 11 points.  Georgetown placed third as a team overall.

At Mrs. Hurst Bowl, held at Dartmouth, the Hoyas finished eighth and were led by Cordo Carraher and Meghan O?Neill who placed 10th in the A division with 153 points, and Blaire Herron and Caroline LaMotte who placed fourth in the B division with 83 points. The Mrs. Hurst Bowl was the first college regatta for Freshman Skipper Blaire Herron.  Blaire and crew Caroline LaMotte sailed quit well winning a number of races. Georgetown placed eighth as a team overall.

At the Ocean County College Fall Regatta, Georgetown placed first for the first time in this regatta. The Hoyas were led by Dan Esdorn and Mary McAuley who placed fourth in the A division and Zach Kavanaugh and Leigh Fogwell who won the B division with 38 points.
