WASHINGTON, D.C.?Georgetown men?s soccer (2-0) beat George Washington (0-1) 1-0 at the fourth-annual D.C. College Cup on Saturday, Sept. 4, held at Reeves Field on the campus of American University.
Georgetown, the defending D.C. College Cup champions, scored the lone goal of the match 33 minutes into the game when Jeff Curtin (Oreland, Pa./Germantown Academy) blasted a Dan Gargan (Philadelphia, Pa./Chestnut Hill Academy) head flick off Danny McAnally's (Mendham, N.J./Delbarton) corner kick past GW junior goalkeeper Derek Biss.
The second half remained scoreless, with both teams turning up the offensive pressure. George Washington?s chance to tie the game came when Joseph Seigel had a diving header that missed the Hoyas' net with 5:19 remaining in the contest, but the Hoyas were able keep the Colonials off the scoreboard for the remaining five minutes of the match to preserve the victory.
The Hoyas held the advantage in shots, 9-8, and also took one more corner kick in the game than the Colonials (4-3). Curtin, Ricky Schramm (East Chester, N.Y./Fordham Prep School), and Kaiser Chowdhry (Columbia, Md./McDonogh) led the Hoyas with two shots apiece. Georgetown keeper sophomore Andrew Keszler (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) also made four stops in the contest.
Georgetown (2-0-0) will take on American in the final match of the D.C. College Cup at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 6 at American University.
