Georgetown Sailing Completes Another Impressive Weekend

Oct. 11, 2005

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown sailing program battled the harsh weather on the Northeast coast this weekend as they took part in three events, highlighted by senior Andrew Campbell (San Diego, Calif./The Bishops School) winning the MAISA Singlehanded Championship Carl Van Duyne Trophy.

Despite winds up to 51 knots, Campbell cruised to the first place finish with 39 points over the 13-race weekend, 25 points ahead of runner-up Chris Branning of host Kings Point. Campbell won the trophy for the third time, and with the win, will advance to the Singlehanded National Championship, where he will try to defend his title and become the first student-athlete to win three. The Nationals are scheduled for November 18-20 at the University of Hawaii.

In addition, two crews competed in the Storm Trysail Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta, finishing first in both the Class 3 and Class 4. Taking place at the Larchmont Yacht Club in City Island, N.Y., both squads raced three times over the weekend with the Lora Ann boat tallying seven points in Class 3 and the Kincsem boat posting four points.

The Hoya women's sailing team were faced with winds up to 25 knots, rain squalls and steep waves this weekend at the Navy Fall Women's Intersectional in Annapolis, Md. Overall, Georgetown finished third with 202 points, trailing only Yale (172) and Dartmouth (195). The strong sailing of the B Division crew of sophomore Blaire Herron (Coronado, Calif./Coronado) and junior Emily Siguler (Conway, Mass./The Hotchkiss School) helped push the Hoyas into the third position, as they placed second out of the 13 teams with 43 points

The Hoyas return to the water this weekend at the Navy Coed Intersectional Regatta in Annapolis, Md.
