Georgetown senior kicker Brad Scoffern (Oakland, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd) kicked a 25-yard field goal in the first overtime period, lifting the Hoyas to a 10-7 non-league win over Duquesne in front of 1,432 fans at the Multi-Sport Field during a game that featured hard, driving rain from kickoff to finish.
In winning its first home game of the season, Georgetown improves to 3-3 overall, while the Dukes fall to 2-3 coming off their bye week.
Georgetown led through three quarters, but Duquesne tied the game in the fourth quarter on a 10-yard scoring pass from freshman quarterback Scott Knapp to Dan Spriggs.
The game went to overtime and the Dukes gained only two yards before a 40-yard field goal attempt from Mary Troyan went wide right, giving the Hoyas the ball on the 25-yard line. Senior running back Marcus Slayton (Cleveland, Ohio/Benedictine) - who ran for 115 yards - picked up 10 yards on three carries to give Georgetown a first down on the Duquesne 15-yard line. Junior quarterback Nick Cangelosi (Camden, N.J./Camden Catholic) ran for three and freshman running back Adrian Ashford (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) picked up four more yards, setting up the kick. Scoffern, who missed a 52-yarder as regulation time expired, sailed a rising line drive from the left hash for the game-winner.
It was the second time the Hoyas won an overtime game this season, beating Bucknell, 19-16, in the season opener on a 33-yard field goal from Eric Bjonerud (Potomac, Md./Georgetown Prep).
Slayton led a Hoya rushing attack that gained 157 yards. He carried the ball 29 times for 115 yards, his second-straight 100-yard game and the fifth of his career. The Georgetown defense held Duquesne to only 170 yards in total offense after they came in averaging 317 yards per game. The Hoyas intercepted two passes, their first two of the season, and had five sacks.
Georgetown heads to the road next week, playing at Cornell. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
