Washington, D.C. - Three members of the Georgetown women's sailing team took part in the 2005 MAISA Women's Single-handed Championships on October 22-23 hosted by Navy.
Senior Jackie Schmitz (McLean, Va./Holton-Arms) was the Hoyas' top finisher as she tied for fourth. However, she lost in a tiebreaker to Charlotte Hill of Navy for the final spot in the Women's Single-handed National Championship later in November, as the top-four student-athletes moved forward. Schmitz totaled 114 points over the 16 races, which included 28 participants. She trailed a pair from St. Mary's, Katie Smith (88) and Jenny Gervais (99), who finished one-two, along with Katie Simon of Columbia (104) and Hill.
Two other Hoyas posted top-ten finishes, as senior Derby Anderson (Annapolis, Md./The Key School) and sophomore Blaire Herron (Coronado, Calif./Coronado) finished seventh and ninth respectively. Anderson finished the weekend with 134 points, while Herron had 187.
Also competing for Georgetown was junior Jessica Stewart (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) who had a 18th place finish with 259 points.
