Savannah, Ga. - The Georgetown University women's basketball team never trailed and won its 2005-06 season opener on the road against Savannah State 67-59 at Tiger Arena.
Senior Leslie Tyburski (Hammond, Ind.) recorded a career-high 14 points, including 12 in the first half, to pace the Hoya attack. Sophomore Kristin Heidloff (Chicago, Ill.) tallied 13 points and dished out six assists against just one turnover in 34 minutes. Sophomore Kieraah Marlow (Coatesville, Pa.) notched seven of her 11 points in the second half to help the Hoyas seal the victory. In her collegiate debut, freshman Katrina Wheeler (Washington, D.C.) scored 10 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
Junior Kate Carlin (Ambler, Pa.) hauled in a career-best 10 rebounds to lead the team, while also chipping in nine points and three steals.
Georgetown raced out to a 14-4 lead as GU knocked down five of its first nine field goals, including its first three three-point attempts of the season. Tyburski hit her fifth field goal of the first half to give the Hoyas a 31-19 edge with 2:55 to go in the opening half. The teams went to the locker rooms with Georgetown holding a 38-24 advantage.
In the first half, Georgetown shot 43% from the floor and outrebounded the Tigers 29-12.
The Hoyas then went cold from the floor hitting just three of their first 19 field goals in the second half. Savannah State benefitted from seven GU turnovers as the Tigers tied the game at 49-49 with 5:16 remaining.
The Hoyas held off a serious comeback attempt by the Tigers and got their lead back when Heidloff hit a huge trey from in front of the Georgetown bench to up the Hoya bulge to 52-49. Heidloff's three began an 11-5 run over the next three minutes as GU went up 61-54 with just 2:10 left.
Georgetown then closed the game going 6-for-6 from the free throw line down the stretch for the win.
The Hoyas finished with 37% shooting for the game despite a 1-10 from long range in the second half.
Georgetown improves to 17-19 all-time in season openers while winning five of its last six openers.
The Hoyas return to action on Wednesday, November 23 when they play host to Mount St. Mary's University in a non-league tilt that begins at 7:30 pm at McDonough Arena.
