Washington, DC - In what could be described as the Hoyas most spirited effort of the season, the Georgetown University women's volleyball team fell 3-1 (30-18, 30-28, 25-30, 30-9) to No. 7 Louisville in BIG EAST action Friday evening at McDonough Arena. Georgetown falls to 6-19 on the season, 2-10 in the league while the Cardinals improve 22-1 overall, 10-1 in the BIG EAST.
Senior Rachel Nelson (Sacramento, Calif./St. Francis) posted her 12th double-double of the season (12 kills, 10 digs) including her 1,000th career kill in the losing effort and sophomore Katie Nulty (Santa Barbara, Calif./Laguna Beach) compiled her third double-double of the season (11 kills, 10 digs) to pace the Hoya attack.
Freshman setter Caitlin Boland (Naperville, Ill./Benet Acad.) handed out 37 assists and junior Rachel Barton (Marietta, Ga./The Walker School) added 10 digs.
In the first game, Louisville jumped out to a 12-4 lead as the Cardinals were led by Lena Ustymenko's five kills. The Hoyas cut the lead to six at 22-16 but Louisville hit .556 for the game and won, 30-18.
Georgetown tied the match at 1-1 winning game two, 30-28. The Hoyas took an 18-9 advantage before U of L took a 25-24 edge. The game was then tied at 26-26 before the Hoyas took four of the game's final five points on kills by Nulty and junior Jessica George (Kennett Square, Pa./Kennett).
Georgetown was equally as exciting in the third game. The Hoyas tied the game at 12-12 before Louisville went on a 9-3 run to take a 21-15 lead. The Hoyas still wouldn't quit and cut the deficit to 24-20 before U of L posted a 30-28 victory.
In the fourth game, the Cardinals posted a 17-2 run and never looked back, winning 30-9.
U of L hit .344 and outblocked Georgetown 23-7 for the match.
Georgetown will be back in action on Sunday, November 6 when they host Cincinnati in the Hoya's final home match of the season. The BIG EAST tilt begins at 2 p.m.
