Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University women's basketball team snapped a two-game losing streak with a 64-60 victory over cross-town rival American tonight at McDonough Arena. Georgetown improves to 5-4 while AU falls to 3-7. Georgetown, in the midst of playing four games in 11 days, has now won five straight over American.
Hoya freshman forward Katrina Wheeler (Washington, D.C./T Roosevelt) recorded her second double-double with a career-high 16 points, ten in the second half to go along with 11 rebounds before she left the game with a knee injury with 3:38 remaining.
Georgetown junior forward Kate Carlin (Ambler, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph's) netted a game-high 17 points on 6-10 shooting from the floor, including three treys. Carlin also hit two clutch free throws with 1:30 left to give GU a 60-57 advantage.
Hoya sophomore Kristin Heidloff (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick) notched the first double-double of her career with 13 points and career-best 11 assists, the second best output by a BIG EAST player this season. Heidloff also calmly hit two consecutive shots from the charity stripe with five seconds remaining to seal the win.
The tight contest saw 10 ties and 20 lead changes. American held a 57-54 advantage with 4:38 to go but Georgetown would hold the Eagles scoreless for the final 4:31 before a Talicia Jackson three-pointer with seven ticks left.
Both teams shot 45% from the floor. American made nine three-pointers, six in the first half while Georgetown made a season-best eight from long range, including six of seven of seven treys in the firs half (85%).
Georgetown hits the floor again on Wednesday, December 28 when they travel to Florida Atlantic University for non-league game that starts at 7 p.m.
