Washington, D.C. -- The Georgetown University women's basketball team topped the visiting Appalachian State Mountaineers, 59-44 today in non-league action. Georgetown improves to 4-2.
Hoya senior guard Bethany LeSueur (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) set new season-highs with 19 points and eight field goals to lead Georgetown in the first-ever meeting between the schools. Junior Kate Carlin (Ambler, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph's) and sophomore guard Kristin Heidloff (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick) each tallied 10 points for the winners while senior center Christine Whitt (Gahanna, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln) set a new career-high with eight blocks.
Georgetown made a season-best 54% of their first half field goals (13-24) and ended the opening period on a 14-2 run, including 11 LeSueur points, to take a commanding 32-19 lead at intermission. LeSueur matched her season-high of 17 points and Whitt recorded six blocks before halftime.
The Hoyas extended their advantage to 46-25 with 10:49 to go in the game on the first collegiate three-pointer by freshman guard Nikki Bozeman (District Heights, Md./Bishop McNamara) but Appalachian St. would get no closer than 52-41 with just 1:18 remaining.
Georgetown improves to 3-0 when they shoot for a better field goal percentage than their opponent while the Hoyas outrebounded their opponent for the fifth time this season.
Georgetown hits the hardwood again on Thursday, December 8 when GU travels to the University of Kentucky for a 7 p.m. non-league game.
