The Hoyas (16-6, 8-3) solidified their hold on third place in the BIG EAST on 2/12/05, defeating West Virginia (14-8, 4-7) at home by a score of 67-60. The sellout crowd of 14, 458 as well as the television audience watching on News Channel 8 were treated to a wild and entertaining game. Jeff Green paced all scorers with 21 points and all rebounders with 9 boards. Brandon Bowman added 15 tallies, 6 rebounds 3 assists and 2 steals. Ashanti Cook contributed 12 points to round out the trio of double figure scoring Hoyas. Jonathan Wallace matched his career high in assists with 6 and Roy Hilbert equaled his best in blocks with 3.
West Virginia used the first 8 minutes of the game to build an 8 point lead. When the Hoyas answered with an 8-0 run the score was knotted at 16 with 10 minutes to play. The Mountaineers then answered with a 7 point run which the Hoyas reduced to 3 (26-29) by intermission. For the half the Hoyas shot 55% (11-20) while the visitors shot 39.3% (11-28). Rebounding was all even at 15 and the Hoyas had 11 turnovers to Wave's 6.
In the second stanza the Hoyas actually improved their shooting from 55% to 56% (14-25). Despite this fact, the Hoyas could not distance themselves from their opponents until the final 2:43 of regulation. That was when an Owens three pointer followed by a Bowman steal and a Reed dunk gave Georgetown a 5 point edge with 02:07 remaining. With the clock winding down Cook and Green each made 1 of two from the stripe so when Beilein?s trey was followed with a Sally Lay-up, the Hoyas were still up 2. Bowman made a lay-up in the final 21 seconds and then Wallace and Green made their free throws for a 67-60 final.
For the game the Hoyas shot 55.6%, won the battle of the boards 34-25, but committed 18 turnovers while only forcing 12.
