PHILADELPHIA, PA -- The Georgetown University women's tennis team (6-7) won two straight matches on the road over the weekend, defeating Villanova 4-3 on Saturday, March 19th and defeating Division III #25 Swarthmore 4-0 on Sunday.
Georgetown opened the Villanova match with a convincing performance in the doubles competition. All three doubles tandems won by large margins. The #1 team of Liddy Bartell (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Torrey Pines) and Adriann Gin (Honolulu, HI/Punahou School) won 8-3. The #2 team of Kristin Dew (Nashville, Tenn./Webb School) and Sana Malouf (McLean, VA/St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) won 8-2. The #3 team of Stephanie Cohen (Fayetteville, N.Y./DeWitt) and Eileen Boyle (Burr Ridge, Ill./St. Ignatius Prep) won 8-3. Georgetown took the early 1-0 lead.
The Hoyas squad then received solid singles play from Bartell and Gin as they won their singles matches in straight sets. Bartell took the #2 singles match 6-1,6-3 while Gin won the #3 singles match 6-4,6-2. Even though the Hoyas led 3-0, Villanova responded by taking the #1, #4 and #5 singles matches in extended three set battles. With the team score tied at 3-3, Boyle took the decisive and final match of the day with an impressive third set performance. The final score of Boyle's three set victory at #6 singles was 6-4,4-6,6-1. After five and a half hours of play, Georgetown clawed out a 4-3 road win over the Wildcats.
The following morning Georgetown found itself back on the court, indoors due to rain, against Swarthmore. After a tense battle in the doubles competition, Georgetown again came out on top to gain a 1-0 lead. Another strong performance came from the #1 tandem of Bartell and Gin who posted an 8-5 victory. Dew and Malouf then clinched the doubles competition with a stick-to-it, narrowest-of margin victory at #2 doubles, 9-8, by a 7-4 score in the tiebreak.
Bartell capitalized on the momentum from the doubles victory, and played another solid singles match start to finish, to finish off the Garnet's #1 in straight sets 6-3,6-2. Dew then claimed the Hoyas next team point with a three set win at #3 singles. The final and match clinching team point on the day came from the racquet of Gin, who steadfastly battled to a win in a extended three set match, winning 7-5,4-6,7-5 at #2 singles. The remaining Hoyas were stop mid-match as the courts were cleared for the Hoya men's match versus Swarthmore.
Georgetown improved their 2004-2005 season record to 5 wins and 6 losses with the two road victories. The Hoyas are back on the road this Thursday at James Madison University for a 2:30 p.m. match.
