WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Beat 'Nova Weekend at the Hilltop started off right for the Hoyas as the Georgetown women's basketball team topped the Wildcats 62-60 in a closely fought battle in McDonough Arena.
Villanova scored the first seven points of the game and led by as many as 10 in the first half. Once the Hoyas gained their composure, they quickly battled back and tied the game with 6:44 left in the period. The Hoyas continued their strong play throughout the remainder of the period and took a 33-31 lead into the tunnel.
The Hoyas built up a 10-point lead early in the second half, before the Wildcats started to find their rhythm from downtown. Villanova, who shot 34 three pointers in the contest, hit only 3 of 17 in the first half, but connected on 8 of 17 in the second. The Wildcats' hot hands posed a serious threat to Georgetown's lead, but the Hoyas were able to hang on, finding themselves up by one with a minute left.
The Hoyas ran the clock down to a mere 26 seconds before Kieraah Marlow was called for a charge on what initially appeared to be a potential three-point play. Villanova's Betsy McManus got a solid look at the basket from the top of the key as time wound down, but the shot went off the rim and into the hands of Bethany LeSueur, sealing the victory.
The Hoyas displayed a balanced offensive attack with four players finishing in double figures for the eighth time this season. Kate Carlin led the team for the second straight game with 14 points, Varda Tamoulianis tallied 13, Marlow added 12 and LeSeuer, who has now scored in double figures in each of the last 10 games, had 10. Tamoulianis also led all rebounders with 11 for her sixth double-double of the season. Jackie Adamshick, who scored a game high 19 points, led the Wildcats.
The Hoyas out shot the Wildcats 46%-39% and won the battle of the boards 34-31. The Hoyas committed only 7 fouls in the game, giving Villanova only 4 free throw opportunities. The Hoyas drew 16 fouls and shot 9 of 14 from the stripe.
The Hoyas finish their regular season on Tuesday night at home against Syracuse. Tip-off is set for 7:30.
