WASHINGTON, DC -- Georgetown defeated Howard 4-3 in a match played at the McDonough Complex courts on Tuesday afternoon.
Georgetown won two of three doubles matches to earn the team point for the doubles competition. The #1 doubles team of Liddy Bartell (Rancho Santa Fe, CA/Torrey Pines) and Adriann Gin (Honolulu, HI/Punahou School) and the #3 team of Stephanie Cohen (Fayetteville, NY/DeWitt) and Eileen Boyle (Burr Ridge, IL/St. Ignatius Prep) won by identical 8-2 scores.
In the singles competition, Georgetown received another solid performance from Bartell who won the #2 singles match 6-0,6-0. Kristin Dew (Nashville, TN/Webb School) chipped in with a 6-3,6-1 victory at #4 singles. And the team point that clinched the victory for the Hoyas was delivered by Gin who won the #3 singles match by a 7-6(6), 6-2 score. Boyle and Sana Malouf (McLean, VA/St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) had very good opportunities to win their singles matches, but were edged out by their Bison opponents in hard fought three set matches. Malouf fell 6-4,4-6,6-3 while Boyle lost a 5-7,7-6(1), 10-5 decision.
With the win over Howard, the Georgetown Hoyas post a 4-0 record against local rivals George Washington, American, George Mason and Howard for the first time since 1991.
The Hoyas next task is a weekend slate of important BIG EAST matches. On Saturday April 9, the Hoya Tennis contingent will face West Virginia in Morgantown, WV. And on Sunday April 10 the Hoyas will host Rutgers at the McDonough Tennis Complex.
