Women's Tennis Holds Annual Awards Banquet

May. 2, 2005

WASHINGTON, DC - Georgetown's women's tennis team held its 2004-2005 Awards Dinner at the Filomena Restaurant in Georgetown on Sunday, May 1. The Hoyas completed the season with an overall record of 8 wins and 12 losses and an eighth place finish in the BIG EAST Conference. Individual athletic and academic awards were announced and presented following the dinner.

Academically, Hoya Tennis student-athletes performed at the highest levels led by Georgetown senior standout Liddy Bartell (Rancho Santa Fe, CA/Torrey Pines) who is the Hoya Tennis nominee for the CoSIDA ESPN The Magazine Academic All American Team.

Hoya Tennis student athletes Bartell, Eileen Boyle (Burr Ridge, IL/St. Ignatius Prep), Kristin Dew (Nashville, TN/Webb School), Nora Gardner (Greenwich, CT/Deerfield Academy), Adriann Gin (Honolulu, HI/Punahou School), Sana Malouf (McLean, VA/St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) and Liz Winokur (West Palm Beach, FL/Cardinal Newman) have been nominated for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Academic All American Award because they have achieved a minimum grade point minimum average of 3.50 for the2004-2005 school year. Those scholar athletes along with Stephanie Cohen (Fayetteville, NY/DeWitt) and Michelle DiCocco (Media, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) will also be nominated for the BIG EAST Scholar Athlete Award.

Head Tennis Coach Rich Bausch presented the Most Improved Player to junior Dew. Dew also won the Most Improved Player for the 2003-2004 season. Last year Dew produced a record of 3-9 at #5 singles. In 2004-2005 Dew, despite playing through the season in doubles and singles hobbled by injury, posted a solid 8-10 record at #4 singles.

Assistant Coach Vince Pulupa presented the Captain's Award to freshmen Cohen. Cohen's example of dedication to the team, and to her own fitness and tennis improvement was exemplary. Her outstanding overall work ethic was cited by the team's coaching staff and by GU's strength and speed training staff.

Coach Bausch presented the BIG EAST Doubles Team of the Year Award to senior Bartell and her partner, freshman Gin. Bartell and Gin achieved a record of 4-1 at #1 doubles in BIG EAST play recording convincing wins over Villanova, Connecticut, Rutgers and West Virginia.

Coach Bausch presented the Seventh Woman Award to freshman Winokur. The Seventh Woman Award is presented to a non-starter who did everything possible to be supportive of her teammates during matches, effectively competed in matches when called upon, and worked hard in practice setting a good work ethic example. Not only had Winokur been in the starting line-up, she had elevated her level of play from the fall season and found herself playing #1 doubles and #1 singles as the spring season began. However, Winokur succumbed to illness in late February and was unable to continue practicing and competing. Despite her physical ailments, Winokur cheered and supported her teammates at all their March and April home contests as they continued the season without her on-court presence.

Coach Bausch presented the "Power of Control" Award e.g. the Critical Situation Award, to sophomore Boyle. Three times during the 2005 spring campaign, Boyle found herself the center of Hoya tennis universe, as she was charged with shouldering a 3-3 team match score and bringing home the 4th and decisive team point in all three matches. Playing those final singles matches with all her teammates on the sideline watching and supporting her, Boyle made the most of those opportunities by will-powering her way to victory each time. Her first Power of Control event occurred at the Villanova match on a cold, windy mid-March Philly day. With the team score at 3-3, Boyle dismantled her Wildcat opponent in the third set, posting a 6-2,4-6,6-1 victory. Boyle's second Power of Control demonstration occurred indoors at Connecticut, in what would prove to be the Georgetown's best victory of the year. Boyle coolly won the decisive match against her Husky opponent 6-3,6-7,6-4. And to further evidence her Power of Control, Boyle was thrust onto center stage in Georgetown's final match of the season in front of a raucous home crowd against Longwood University. As in her previous P.O.C. displays, Boyle's mental, physical and emotional strength powered her to victory and clinched the fourth team point with a 6-3,4-6,6-2 final score. Boyle punctuated the 2004-2005 Hoya team's final match together with another Power of Control victory!
