Washington, DC-- The Georgetown University men's crew team is on its way to wrapping up an impressive regular season. Both the heavyweight and lightweight squads have claimed important victories over the past month.
The men's heavyweight crew most recently competed in the Yale University Invitational, held with George Washington University on April 30 on Mercer Lake. The Varsity 8 was defeated in this event, placing behind Yale who claimed victory in 6:04.0, and George Washington (6:04.65). The Hoyas also competed on April 23, where they traveled to Philadelphia to compete with Temple and Syracuse. The event was held on the Schuylkill river. The Varsity 8 lost a close second place battle to Temple, who edged the Hoyas by four tenths of a second. Syracuse timed 6:21.7 to claim first place, and Temple and Georgetown followed respectively in times of 6:27.01, and 6:27.44. The Hoyas did claimed victory in the 4 with Cox event, claiming wins over Temple's A and B squads, where they timed 7:13. On April 17, the Hoyas competed in a matchup with Rutgers, where the event was held on the Raritan River. The Varsity 8 was defeated, timing 6:06.8 to Rutgers 6:00.9.
The men's lightweight competed in the Rutgers invitional on April 30. Georgetown competed against both Rutgers and Delaware at this event. The Varsity 8 claimed victory, timing 6:09.61 over Rutgers (6:12.73), and Delaware (6:15.41). The Second Varsity 8 also was victorious, as they timed 6:12.84 over Rutgers and Delaware. On April 23, the Hoyas competed in the Wood-Hammond Trophy on the Schuylkill river against Penn and Princeton. The Hoyas won a close race (6:00.0), just edging Penn (6:01.3) and Princeton (6:03.4). On April 10, the Hoyas competed against Delaware, Harvard, and Columbia. Georgetown's Varsity 8 claimed wins over #1 Harvard, Delaware and Columbia. Georgetown timed 5:55.2, Harvard timed 5:56.7, Delaware timed 5:59.9 and Columbia with 6:04.0.
The Hoyas will next compete in the Eastern Sprints held on May 15 in Worcester, Mass.
