Washington DC - This summer marked some high points for the Georgetown University men's golf program. Aside from some impressive finishes by two alums and a newcomer, the program was recognized by Golf Digest as one of the elite in the country.
The Georgetown men's golf program was honored in the latest issue of Golf Digest as they were selected one of the top-25 colleges for golf in the country. The magazine used a combination of academic and athletic success to rate head coach Thomas Hunter and the Hoyas at No. 24.
Incoming freshman Tim Hager (Ivyland, PA) and 1976 alum Chris Lange each qualified for the 105th United States Amateur Championships, which begins Monday, August 22 at the Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, PA. Both players went through qualifying on August 2 at the Llarnech Country Club in Haverton, PA and August 3 at the Rolling Green Golf Club in Springfield, PA. Hager tied for fifth at the sectional with a 138 (67-71), while Lange finished ninth at 142, needing a playoff win to move onto the U.S. Amateur.
In the week prior to the sectional qualifying, Lange also competed in the 2005 U.S. Senior Open, missing the cut after firing a two-round total of 9-over 151 (75-76).
2004 alum Nick Cook earned his first professional victory, as he took home the 71st Connecticut State Open, held at the Country Club of Waterbury from August 1-3. After a three-round total of one-under par 206 (66-71-69), Cook needed three playoff holes before he defeated Brent Paladino.
