WASHINGTON, DC - The Georgetown University women's volleyball team lost a heartbreaker 3-2 (30-27, 28-30, 30-28, 25-30, 13-15) to cross-town rival American University on Tuesday, September 20, at McDonough Gym. The loss snapped a two-match winning steak and dropped the Hoyas to 4-8 on the season. The Eagles improve to 6-7 on the year.
Both teams struggled from the service stripe, with AU committing 17 service errors and GU 16. American outhit Georgetown .265, including .778 for game five, to .208 and held a 13-9 advantage in team blocks.
Four Hoyas hit in double figures in the contest, including junior middle blocker Annie Connor, who tied AU's Elizabeth Maloney for a match-high in hitting with 20 kills each. Connor also stepped up with six blocks, including a solo stop. Senior outside hitter Rachel Nelson tallied another double-double on the season with 14 kills and 15 blocks, as did senior opposite side hitter Jenny Weed with 13 kills and 11 digs. Nelson and Weed also posted four aces each. Freshman middle blocker Katherine Niesen rounded out the Hoya quartet in double figures with 12 kills. She also recorded nine digs and tied Connor in blocks with six.
Sophomore Kate Fisher and freshman Caitlin Boland shared the setter's duties on the evening. Fisher finished with 38 assists and four aces, while Boland wrapped up the match with 22 assists, three digs and two kills. Sophomore libero Kate Nulty registered 11 digs in the loss.
Georgetown will open the BIG EAST portion of the 2005 schedule with a match on Friday, November 23, at Syracuse. Match time is 7:00 p.m. The Hoyas then travel to Milwaukee, WI, to meet new BIG EAST member Marquette on Sunday, September 25 at 1:00 p.m.
