Washington, DC - The Georgetown men's soccer team scored a goal with 5:05 left in regulation to tie the game at 2-2 and then won the contest seven minutes into the overtime period, topping visiting Rutgers University, 3-2 today at North Kehoe Field. Georgetown improves to 6-2-0 overall, 3-1-0 in BIG EAST action, while Rutgers falls to 2-6-0, 1-3 in conference play.
Georgetown junior Ricky Schramm (Eastchester, NY) tallied his second goal of the game with 2:42 remaining in the overtime session after taking a through ball from Tim Convey (Philadelphia, PA) and a touch pass from Richard Frank (Paradise Valley, AZ) to give the Hoyas their second consecutive win and keep GU unbeaten at home in their last seven matches at North Kehoe Field (6-0-1).
The Hoyas, who now stand alone in first place in the BIG EAST Blue Division, have won three straight games over the Rutgers dating back to 2002.
Georgetown got on the board just three minutes into the contest when Schramm slipped the ball past Rutgers goalkeeper Lubos Ancin (Burlington, NJ) on a breakaway after taking a beautiful feed from Convey. The teams went into halftime with GU ahead 1-0.
Rutgers tied the game at 1-1, 12 minutes into the second half as Nick Labrocca (Howell, NJ) crossed a ball into the penalty area where freshman Bohan Skoric (Osijek, Croatia) found the back of the net for his first career goal.
Seventeen minutes later, the Scarlet Knights took a 2-1 advantage when Skoric was the beneficiary of a Sean Cameron (N. Brunswick, NJ) cross.
With 5:05 left in regulation, the Hoyas tied the game at 2-2. Senior Jeff Curtin (Oreland, PA) bicycle-kicked a ball into the penalty area into a crowd of bodies before ending up on the foot of Danny McAnally (Mendham, NJ). The senior blasted the ball past the RU keeper for his first goal of the season to the cheers of the GU faithful.
Seven-plus minutes into OT, Schramm scored the game-winner as Georgetown improved to 3-0 in overtime contests this season.
Georgetown collected 15 shots to RU's 11, but Rutgers held a 6-2 advantage in the corner kick category.
The Hoyas will be back in action again on Wednesday, September 28 when they host Manhattan in a non-league match that begins at 3:00 pm.
