The Georgetown University men's tennis squad opened the 2005-06 season at the 26th Annual DC Metropolitan Championships on the Hilltop. The Hoyas completed the weekend with three titles as juniors Burt Baggio (Coppersburg, PA) and Kevin Killeavy (Indian Harbor Beach, FL) took home the Flight A and B individual crowns, respectively, and freshmen Ryan Goldstein (Salt Lake City, UT) and James Portnoy (Minnetonka, MN) combined for the Flight B Doubles title.
The 2005 DC Metro Championship featured 75 athletes from Howard, American, George Washington, George Mason, Temple, Goucher College, Mary Washington, Mt. St. Mary's, Loyola (MD), Catholic and host Georgetown.
Baggio made a big impression in his first-ever on-court appearance in Hoya blue and grey, as he transferred to the Hilltop this summer. Unseeded in the B Flight Singles draw, he won the championship on Sunday afternoon by downing Faron Carter of Howard 6-4, 2-6, 10-5. Baggio began his Sunday march to the Championship with a stirring three set win over Carter's Bison teammate, third-seeded Othmane Garma, 6-4, 5-7, 10-5 in the semifinals.
Killeavy won the C Flight Singles Draw with relative ease, winning four matches without dropping a set along the way. Killeavy had to thwart teammate Kevin Walsh in the singles final on Sunday afternoon to claim the title, 6-0, 6-4.
Goldstein and Portnoy won the B Flight Doubles championship, defeating teammates Rich Moran and Kevin Walsh, 8-6.
The Hoyas produced many other significant wins during the course of the tournament. In the A Singles Draw, the top four Hoya singles players all claimed hard-fought and well- earned victories. Sophomore Andrew Clayton (Salt Lake City, UT) defeated George Mason's No. 1 singles player and American's No. 7 singles player to reach the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, sophomore Etienne Paris (Miami, FL) eeked out a tough three-set victory over American's No. 6 player, while classmate Ted Tywang (Nashville, TN) downed GW's No. 3 singles player in three sets. Freshman Ken Wong also scored a three-set win, defeating Temple's No. 3 singles player.
In the B Flight Singles draw, the Hoyas produced more solid results, as freshman Adam Gross (Quogue, NY) and sophomore Soctt Maucher (Mount Pleasant, NC) each reached the quarterfinals.
In the C Flight Singles draw, freshman Kevin Walsh made his way to the final before the loss to Killeavy in the final. C Flight Doubles Champions Goldstein and Portnoy spent some more time on the court together, but on opposite sides of the net as they met in the Consolation Singles Final, where Goldstein got the upper hand with a 6-5, 7-6 victory.
In doubles play, the freshman team of Wong and Gross won three matches and the A Doubles Consolation Draw Championship.
The Hoyas next competition is scheduled for Friday, October 7, against local rival George Washington at the McDonough Outdoor Courts at 2:30 p.m.
