Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University women's volleyball team was defeated by visiting West Virginia, 3-1 tonight at McDonough Arena (31-29, 29-31, 32-30, 30-22). Georgetown falls to 5-10 overall, 1-2 in BIG EAST action while the Mountaineers improve to 11-5, 1-2 in the league.
Georgetown was led by senior Rachel Nelson's (Sacramento, Calif/St. Francis) 16 kills while Katherine Niesen (Gainesville, Fla./Eastside) chipped in with ten kills. Sophomore Kate Nulty (Santa Barbara, Calif./Laguna Blanca) and freshman Jessica Buffum (San Jose, Calif./Lynbrook) notched 16 and 11 digs, respectively. Caitlin Boland (Naperville, Ill./Benet Acad.) handed out 23 assists while sophomore Kate Fisher (Menlo Park, Calif./Menlo) set 20 assists.
Four Mountaineers tallied double-figure kills. Kelly Mullins posted a team-high 13 kills, while Stephanie Zolna, Julie Hockenson and Ashley Pappas all turned in ten kills apiece. Lisa Hough hit a game-high .400. Aurora Ebert-Santos corralled a gmatch-high 20 digs to go along with Kailee Goolud's 11. Goold passed a match-high 42 assists for the Mountainners.
All four games were within six points the entire evening but in the fourth game, West Virginia took a 16-11 advantage and never looked back. The Hoyas hit just -.081 in the final game while the visitors had 16 kills in 36 total attacks (.250)
Georgetown will be back in action again on Sunday, October 2 when they host Pittsburgh at 2 p.m.
