WASHINGTON, DC - Georgetown men's soccer (2-0-0) defeated the AU Eagles (0-1-1) in a 1-0 shutout to win the Craig Tartasky Trophy at the D.C College Cup on North Kehoe Field today. This is the second College Cup won by Georgetown as the Hoyas claimed the title in 2003.
The Hoyas took the stage against the Eagles in front of 770 cheering fans, with both teams gunning for a chance to win the Craig Tartasky Trophy. Georgetown played aggressive offense in the first half and saw results quickly. In the 21st minute of play senior Benjamin Jefferson-Dow (Seattle, WA) scored off a double assist from junior Ricky Schramm (East Chester, NY) and sophomore Mike Glaccum (Philadelphia, PA). The Hoyas would go into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
Less than three minutes into the second half, play was suspended as AU's Philip Purdy went down with an injury. When play resumed AU came out with a high level of intensity controlling the ball offensively for the majority of the half. The Hoya defense led by senior Jeff Curtin (Oreland, PA) was able to hold off AU and end the game with a 1-0 victory. Goalkeeper Andrew Keszler (Bethesda, MD) recorded his second strait shutout of the season. Keszler climbed into a tie for seventh place for total career shutouts, now owning six in his two seasons as a starter.
Following the game senior Jeff Curtin, senior Benjamin Jefferson-Dow, senior Andrew Keszler and junior Tim Convey (Philadelphia, PA) were named to the All-D.C. College Cup Team and Curtin received further honors as he was named tournament MVP.
In the first game of the D.C. College Cup today, George Washington defeated Howard in a 3-0 shutout. George Washington came in second place at the tournament with a tie on Friday and a win today, American followed in third place and Howard finished in fourth place.
The Hoyas take the field again at the University of Maryland Tournament this Friday, September 9 against VCU at 5 p.m.
