WASHINGTON - Washington, D.C. - Georgetown senior
Bethany LeSueur (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) tallied her second double-double of the season with 19 points and 11 rebounds but visiting Notre Dame withstood a furious 23-8 Hoya run over the final 12 minutes as the No. 24/22 Fighting Irish edged the Hoyas, 54-52 today in front of the largest crowd at McDonough Arena.
Notre Dame (12-5, 3-3 BE) won its first BIG EAST road game of the season while the Hoyas dropped their third straight and fell to 8-9, 1-5.
Georgetown sophomore Kieraah Marlow (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) posted 12 points to go along with seven boards while sophomore Kristin Heidloff (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick) and freshman Nikki Bozeman (District Heights, Md./Bishop McNamara) each handed out four assists.
Melissa D'Amico had 10 rebounds for the Irish (12-5, 3-3 Big East), who scored only one field goal in the last 10 minutes as late-charging Georgetown put together a 19-4 run.
Notre Dame's Breona Gray had the chance to seal the game, but missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 14.9 seconds to play.
The Irish led 32-18 at halftime. They extended the lead to 17 three times, the last coming on Charel Allen's layup with 10:07 left. Notre Dame led 19-6 as the Hoyas shot 1-of-11 from the floor in the opening 6-plus minutes.
Freshman Katrina Wheeler (Washington, D.C./T. Roosevelt) (career-high six blocks) and Marlow each scored four points in the GU spurt down the stretch as the Hoyas forced the Irish to miss nine of their final ten shots down the stretch.
Georgetown travels to Cincinnati on Wednesday, January 25 for a BIG EAST tilt that tips off at 7 p.m.
