Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University volleyball team welcomes BIG EAST Conference opponent South Florida to McDonough Arena on Saturday, October 14 at 1 p.m. The Hoyas, 6-12 overall with a 0-5 mark in the league, are in search of their first BIG EAST victory while the Bulls carry a 7-10 record, 3-2 in the conference.
The Hoyas are coming off a 3-1 win over non-conference foe UMBC on Tuesday. The Hoyas snapped an eight-game losing streak with the win and are now 4-0 at home against non-league opponents. Sophomore Jessica Buffum (San Jose, Calif./Lynbrook) leads the team with 243 kills while senior Annie Connor (Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis) is behind her with 176. Connor leads the team with 66 blocks (11 solo, 55 assists) and maintains a .230 attack percentage. Sophomore Caitlin Boland (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) leads the team with 381 assists and 24 service aces.
South Florida has played five-straight conference opponents, posting a 3-2 mark and are coming off a weekend where they split a pair of road games. The Bulls dealt West Virginia a 3-1 decision while posting a 3-0 loss at Pittsburgh. The Bulls rely on Marcela Gurgel as she leads the team with 294 kills, notching 37 aces on the season.
This is the second meeting between the two schools in league-play as the Bulls lead the series, 1-0, defeating the Hoyas 3-0 during the 2005 season - South Florida's first season in the BIG EAST Conference.
The Hoyas and Bulls share six common opponents (Wright State, Seton Hall, Marquette, Syracuse, Pittsburgh and West Virginia) with the Blue and Gray posting a 1-5 record against those teams and USF carrying a 3-3 record. In the only non-conference matchup, Georgetown defeated Wright State with a convincing 3-1 (30-22, 27-30, 30-17, 30-27) score while South Florida fell just short in a tight 3-2 decision.
The Hoyas only have BIG EAST opponents left on the 2006 schedule and they will host four other league opponents following the USF game.
