Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University volleyball team dropped a 0-3 (27-30, 24-30, 33-35) decision at West Virginia today. The Hoyas drop to 5-12 overall with a 0-5 mark in the BIG EAST Conference. West Virginia improves to 2-19, 1-5 BE.
Sophomore Jessica Buffum (San Jose, Calif./Lynbrook) recorded a double-double with 20 kills and 14 digs.
The third game saw the Hoyas make a come within one point of winning the game after coming back from a 19-15 deficit. The Hoyas went on a four-point run to tie the game that ended on a kill from Buffum. Trailing 29-27, freshman Kortney Robinson (Pleasant Grove, Utah/Pleasant Grove) recorded a kill to pull within one. The Hoyas would win three of the next four points to lead, 31-30, with a chance to win the game. WVU's Abby Tevis notched a critical kill to tie the score and the Mountaineers would go on to win the game, 30-27.
The second game saw a quick seven-point run from West Virginia to put them up, 14-8, a lead the Hoyas would not recover from. The Blue and Gray strung together a five-point streak, but still trailed 25-20. Buffum recorded an impressive eight kills and four digs in the second game alone. West Virigina went on to win the game 30-24.
The first game saw Georgetown lead for the majority of the game. A six-point run was enough for the Hoyas to take the lead throughout the game, leading 21-18 at one point. The Mountaineers took advantage of Hoya errors and capitalized on kill opportunities to regain the lead (23-21), and they would not lose it en route to the 30-27 victory.
Freshman Jessica Hardy (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa) recorded 19 digs and three service aces on the day. Sophomore Caitlin Boland (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) led the team with a .400 hitting percentage and 42 assists. The team recorded four total blocks on the day.
The Hoyas return to action on Tuesday, October 10 when they host UMBC at McDonough Arena. The match is slated for 7 p.m.
