Feb. 8, 2006

Stats

Syracuse, N.Y. - Junior Kate Carlin (Ambler, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph's) came off the bench and scored a game-high 17 points, including three consecutive three-pointers in the final 4:21 to lead the Georgetown University women's basketball team to a 58-51 BIG EAST victory tonight over Syracuse in the Carrier Dome. Georgetown wins consecutive games for the first time since December and improves to 10-12, 3-8 in the league.

The Hoyas, who won their first league game on the road, received 16 points from senior Bethany LeSueur (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) and the fourth double-double of the season from sophomore Kieraah Marlow (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville), who tallied 14 points and 14 rebounds. Freshman Katrina Wheeler (Washington, D.C./T. Roosevelt) hauled in 11 rebounds and blocked three shots.

Syracuse held a slim 41-40 advantage with 8:45 to go. Carlin took an outlet pass from Wheeler and dropped her first trey of the second half for a 43-41 Hoya edge and Georgetown would never trail again. Baskets on consecutive trips from Marlow and LeSueur gave GU a 47-43 lead with 5:35 left.

The next three minutes saw a flurry of action. After a Syracuse free throw, Carlin hit a three-pointer from the wing for a 50-44 Georgetown lead. The Orange worked the ball around the perimeter and received a trey from Jenny Eckhart (53-49). Carlin answered with another from long range for a 53-49 lead. Another Syracuse free throw led the Hoyas into the offensive set. Carlin found herself near the top of the key and drilled her third straight bomb with an hand in her face for a seven-point Georgetown bulge, 56-49.

The Hoyas would not allow Syracuse another field goal over the remaining 2:40 for the win.

Georgetown got out of the gates quickly taking a 14-2 lead through the first seven minutes. The Hoyas made five of their first 12 shots from the floor, including two treys while forcing the Orange into 1-10 shooting and six turnovers in the stretch.

Syracuse cut their deficit to five, 24-19 over the next seven minutes as the Hoyas went cold from the floor. GU went 6-24 from the field (25%) over the final 13 minutes of the half and five of their eight points to close the half came from the charity stripe.

The Hoyas held a slim 30-28 edge at the break. LeSueur scored ten points in the first half while Heidloff netted seven. Syracuse freshman Brittany Smith scored eight of her 11 first half points in the final 3:23 of the opening period.

Georgetown has now won six of the last seven games over the Orange.

The Hoyas will be off for a week before returning to action on Wednesday, February 15. GU hosts No. 13 DePaul at McDonough Arena in a BIG EAST game that tips off at 7:30 p.m.
