Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown men's heavyweight crew team was the runner-up for the Gilbert H. Hood, Jr. Point Trophy at the 19th Annual George Washington Invitational Crew Classic on Saturday on the Potomac River. With 34 points, the Hoyas trailed only the U.S. Naval Academy for the title, while Virginia was third at 31.
In the highlighted race of the afternoon, the varsity eight, Georgetown, the 20th-ranked heavyweight team in the country, narrowly lost to Navy, the 6th-ranked squad, by 1.3 seconds. Navy crossed in 5:53.60, while the Hoyas posted a time of 5:54.90. In the second varsity eight, the Hoyas again narrowly fell to the Midshipman, this time losing by 3.2 seconds (6:03.00 to 6:06.20).
In the closest race of the day, the Georgetown freshman eight, edged Navy by 0.6 seconds to take the first place. The Hoyas were at 6:05.20, while Navy at 6:05.80. The Midshipman (6:27.80), however, took the second freshman eight race with Georgetown coming in second at 6:34.90.
In the varsity four, Navy had the first two boats, but the Hoyas were third, only 1.5 seconds behind second. Navy's two boats crossed in 6:46.30 and 6:52.30, while Georgetown finished in 6:53.80.
