Georgetown Summer Journals - Week One

June 5, 2006

This is the first of our newly established weekly journal updates. In these weekly journals I hope to provide our alumni, parents and other friends with an insider's perspective on the program -- kind of a weekly blog aimed at informing the Georgetown Soccer community about summer workouts, team culture and plans for the upcoming season. So, please bear with me as I ramble, and be sure to contact Tim Hogan (tjh9@georgetown.edu) in Hoyas Unlimited with suggestions for the future.

As of now, the team seems poised and ready to attack the "meat" of the summer fitness packet. A three-phase program, the workouts consist generally of five days of running per week, 1-2 suggested games (pick-up or organized), and three days of lifting. Contrary to the summer fitness regiments supported by many other college programs, this packet is very practical and straightforward. I am confident that this summer's workouts will help our team reach the fitness level which we have visibly lacked for the past few years.

In order to ensure our close attention to Coach Wiese's regimen, I have decided to implement a call-list which requires each member of the team to make one call per week to another assigned team member. The hope is that our boys will return to the Hilltop on August 5th with a strong sense of positive team chemistry and a shared vision for success. The calls also will ensure accountability on the runs, as incoming freshmen will be making calls to seniors.

Thus far, I have spoken with several of our incoming freshmen, as well as all of my fellow seniors. Guys are paying close attention to the runs, and hitting the challenging times which will be stepping stones for the subsequent phases of our running regimen.

It is truly a great time to be a co-captain of the Hoyas. I am very proud of our new coaching staff, incoming class and returning lettermen. We will undoubtedly return to the Hilltop fitter and more driven than we have in recent years. One can only imagine what this blueprint will help us to achieve in 2006.

Until next week,

Hoya Saxa
