WASHINGTON, DC - The Georgetown University women's volleyball team will open the BIG EAST Conference portion of the 2006 schedule on Friday, September 22, when the Pirates (8-5) of Seton Hall University pay a visit to McDonough Gym. The match will tip off at 7:00 p.m.
The Hoyas enter this weekend's competition with a 5-7 record after a rough weekend at the Stanford Invitational. The Hoyas fell to #7 Stanford (3-0; 30-20, 30-23, 30-25), #8 Santa Clara (3-0; 30-22, 30-16, 30-21) and UC-Irvine (3-2; (30-21, 20-30, 30-26, 26-30, 15-8). Despite the losses, the Hoyas showed great promise for such a young team. Sophomore Jessica Buffum (San Jose, Calif./Lynbrook) was named to the Stanford Invitational All-Tournament Team, her second such honor on the season.
Buffum leads the Hoyas offensively with 170 kills over 44 games for a 3.86 per game average, and in points 188. The sophomore outside hitter is second on the team in digs with 106 or 2.41 per game, and has recorded 21 assists, 16 blocks and 10 service aces.
Junior Katie Nulty (Santa Barbara, Calif./Laguna Blanca) and senior Annie Connor (Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis) rank first on the squad on defense. Nulty tops the Hoyas in digs with 166 over 43 games for a 3.86 per game average. Connor holds first place in blocks with 46. Her statistics also include 99 kills, 23 digs, 14 assists and six aces.
