Washington, D.C. -- After a week off from competition, the Georgetown University men's soccer team plays hosts to Connecticut in an important BIG EAST matchup between Blue Division rivals. Kickoff at the North Kehoe Soccer Field is slated for 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 23.
Georgetown alum Dan Helfrich (F, `98) will be calling the action and can be heard at www.guhoyas.com.
The Hoyas (3-5-0, 2-2 BE) come into the contest with a 1-1 home record and host a Connecticut team that has won two-straight and hasn't allowed a goal in three-straight games. Both teams have played into overtime on three occasions already this season.
Georgetown is coming off a 1-0 OT loss at Rutgers last Sunday. GU is led by Ricky Schramm (Eastchester, N.Y./Fordham Prep) who leads the team and ranks sixth in the league with four goals. The senior forward is alone in fourth place on the school's all-time list with 33 career goals after his game-winner in the win at Villanova on September 15.
As a team, Georgetown is tied for eighth in the league with 12 goals and GU has complemented those goals with an assist 10 times. Sophomores Corey Zeller (Toms River, N.J./Toms River) and Richard Frank (Paradise Valley, Ariz./Chaparral) have each dished out two assists apiece.
Hoya junior goalkeeper Joe Devine (Exton, Pa./The Haverford School) has two shutouts in four starts this season with both shutouts coming against BIG EAST opponents.
Georgetown freshman defender Len Coleman (Basking Ridge, N.J./The Pingry School) is one of seven GU players to start every game.
Georgetown is one of three BIG EAST team to have scored five goals in a game this season (Notre Dame & St. John's). The Hoyas tallied five times in a season-opening 5-2 win over George Washington.
The Huskies (4-2-2, 3-0-1 BE) have played the same four BIG EAST teams as Georgetown (Rutgers, Villanova, St. John's and Syracuse) with the tie coming vs. St. John's. UConn has allowed just nine goals so far and their top goal scorers are Akeem Priestley (3 G, 2 A), O'Brien White (2 G, 2 A) and Karl Schilling (2 G). Junior defender Julius James was last season's BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year.
The Hoyas will be back in action again on Wednesday, September 27 when the Hoyas welcome Seton Hall to the Hilltop for another conference clash at 3 p.m.
