Men’s Soccer Announces 2025 Award Winners

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's soccer team has announced the recipients of the team awards for the 2025 campaign. The Hoyas had an impressive year, winning the BIG EAST regular season and Championship, as well as earning an NCAA Tournament berth and advancing to the NCAA quarterfinals.
 
Most Valuable Player
Zach Zengue
Midfielder
North Oaks, Minn. / Shattuck St. Mary's
  • Zengue was a First Team All-American, the BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year and a unanimous First Team All-BIG EAST honoree.
  • He was named a MAC Hermann Trophy Semifinalist as well as First Team All-East Region by the United Soccer Coaches.
  • Zengue started all 22 games he appeared in and had a team-leading 14 goals and 14 assists for 42 points on the season.
  • This includes three game winners and four penalty kicks.
  • The North Oaks, Minnesota native led the BIG EAST in points, goals and assists while ranking third, eighth and third in the three categories in the nation, respectively.
  • He was a Preseason All-BIG EAST selection and earned three BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week awards this past season while also being named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on two occasions.
  • Following his sophomore year, he was selected by the Columbus Crew in the second round with the 29th pick and 58th overall in the MLS Draft.
  • Zengue graduated in December with a degree in theology and religious studies and is currently playing with the Columbus Crew.
Most Improved Player
Mateo Ponce Ocampo
Midfielder

  • Ponce Ocampo appeared in all 22 games with 15 starts to his credit.
  • He was third on the team in scoring with four goals and six assists for 14 points on the season.
  • The midfielder scored two goals, including the game-winner, against UConn in the BIG EAST Championship; he was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Offensive Player and selected for the All-Tournament team.
Ricardo Mendoza Award
Given to the player who exhibits spirit, leadership and dedication
Matthew Helfrich
Midfielder
McLean, Va. / McLean
  • Helfrich started all 22 games on the backline for the Hoyas in 2025.
  • He tallied four assists on the year.
  • Helfrich was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on October 6.
  • He was part of a backline that managed 11 shutouts on the season.
 
Luis Mendez Award
Selected by their peers, this award is given to the player whose dedication to the team is exhibited through selfless actions and giving to others.
Julian Barrios Cristales
Midfielder
Chesapeake, Va. / University of Texas at Austin High School
  • Barrios Cristales was a team captain who appeared in 20 games with 17 starts to his credit.
  • After four years on the Hilltop, he graduated with a degree in economics.
  • This is the second-consecutive season that Barrios Cristales earned this honor.
