Jan. 19, 2007

Washington, D.C. - Former Georgetown men's basketball player and member of the Georgetown University Hall of Fame, Andrew Kostecka ('48), died January 17 at Manor Care in Bethesda, MD. Kostecka was born in Newark, N.J. and has resided in Potomac, MD since 1965. He was 85 years old.

Kostecka played for Georgetown during the 1942-43 season, the year the Hoyas played in the finals of the NCAA tournament. Upon his return from the service, Kostecka was the leading scorer on the Georgetown basketball team during the 1947 season. He averaged 17.8 points per game, the highest scoring average in 29 years. The following year, he served as team captain in his final season.

Kostecka was inducted into the Georgetown University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1958.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Maria Kostecka; two sons, Andrew Kostecka and his wife, Lana, and Robert Kostecka and his wife Pamela; and five grandchildren, William, Joseph, Matthew, Laurie and Andrew III.
