Oct. 13, 2007

Box Score

Morgantown, W.Va. - Andy Wright netted his fourth goal of the season with just nine seconds to go in the first overtime session minute to lead the No. 19 West Virginia Mountaineers to a 1-0 overtime victory over Georgetown Saturday night in BIG EAST action. The Hoyas fall to 3-9-0 on the year, 2-5-0 in league play. GU dropped its sixth game of the season by the score of 1-0.

Georgetown freshman Matthew Brutto, making his fifth start in the last six games, made five saves in the loss.

The Hoyas seemed to control the pace of play through the first 60 minutes. Georgetown mounted this best scoring chances in the early going of the first half. Mike Glaccum, Conor Neusel and Mark Zeman posted three of the team's four shots on goal over a two-minute span 13 minutes into the game.

Corey Zeller and Chandler Diggs both just missed the crossbar with shots off free kicks, Zeller in the first half and Diggs' opportunity coming early in the second half.

After a Hoya foul and restart, West Virginia's Andrew Halsell assisted on Wright's game-winner.

West Virginia held an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.

"A 0-0 tie would have been a fair result with the way the game played out," said head coach Brian Wiese. I'm so disappointed for the boys because they played a fabulous game. We did what we wanted to do ... Playing on the road vs. a really good ranked opponent.

"Matthew (Brutto) made one of the better saves you'll see midway through the second half to get us to overtime," Wiese added.

"Alex Verdi and Len Coleman played like men. Mark Zeman and Mostafa (Ebrahimnejad) played maybe their best games of the year.

"It's a discouraging one but we're still looking to catch a break," Wiese said. "We're so close but we just didn't capitalize on our chances that we created."

Georgetown hosts cross-town rival American University on Tuesday, October 16 in a non-league game that kicks off at 3 p.m.
