Georgetown trailed 24-21 at the break. GU shot 43 percent from the floor in the first half, but committed 13 turnovers and had a five-minute scoring drought under the 8:26 mark while Hampton went on a mini 6-0 spurt.
The Hoyas took their first lead, 15-14, at 9:31 on a Marlow dribble drive and layup. The next time down the floor, Jaleesa Butler ripped a steal on the baseline, Fuller pushed the ball the other way, finding Marlow for an easy transition bucket. It was the tenth HU turnover, while the Hoyas had made 47 percent of their field goals from the floor up to that point.
The start of the second half was delayed more than eight minutes due to a shot clock malfunction and the shot clock continued to have a glitch time after time during the remainder of the half.
After the first delay, Marlow scored on two consecutive trips down the floor as the Hoyas executed the offense perfectly. Heidloff then knocked down a little jumper on a broken play to give GU a 27-26 edge. Heidloff then scored again after a pretty back-door cut with Marlow finding her classmate in the paint for an assist for a 29-26 Hoya advantage.
Marlow went to the bench with her third foul at 15:56 and then senior 6-5 center Aminata Diop was sidelined with her third foul at 15:47.
Numerous fouls on both teams were called early in the second half, with the Hoyas committing nine team fouls just nine minutes into the second period. Two personal fouls were charged to Hampton on the next Georgetown offensive possession so both teams were in the bonus with 11:22 to go in regulation.
Georgetown extended its lead to 36-30 on two Marlow free throws at 16:06 before the Hoyas dropped just one field goal over the next nine minutes as Hampton tied the game at 39-39 with 7:15 remaining. GU was ahead 38-30 with 11:21 to go before Hampton clawed to within 38-37 over the next two and a half minutes.
The score was back and forth for the entirety.
