Georgetown University Student-Athlete Award Recipients Announced

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University Athletic Department announced the recipients of the Georgetown University Student-Athlete Awards. Sailing standout Caroline LaMotte (Oxford, Md./The Hotchkiss School) earned the Robert A. Duffey Scholar-Athlete Award while volleyball star Rachel Barton (Marietta, Ga./The Walker School) will receive the Stephanie Waterman Scholar-Athlete Award. Men's soccer standout Ricky Schramm (Eastchester, N.Y./Fordham Prep) will be recognized as the Thomas Graham Scholar-Athlete Award recipient.

LaMotte earned the prestigious Robert A. Duffey Scholar-Athlete Award. The Duffey Award is given to the student-athlete who best embodies academic and athletic excellence. Duffey was a model student-athlete during the early 1940s at Georgetown. He was a member of the famed 1941 and 1942 football teams and member of the basketball team which was an NCAA finalist in 1942-43. Duffey also excelled in the classroom in the College of Arts and Sciences. After his graduation in 1944, Duffey joined the military to fight in World War II. In late 1944, Duffey was killed in combat in Germany.

LaMotte attained a 3.49 GPA as a double major in Art History and English and was recognized on the Dean's List multiple times. A two-time All-American, she was a vital member of the Hoyas' ICSA team race 2006 National Championship team.

Rachel Barton earned the Stephanie Waterman Scholar-Athlete Award that is given to a graduating senior student-athlete in the GU School of Foreign Service for their outstanding achievement. The award is given in Waterman's name after she captained the Hoyas' varsity tennis team before passing away in Senegal in 1985.

Barton, a Culture and Politics double major, earned a 3.96 GPA while being named to the Dean's List multiple times. Barton graduates in three and a half years and persevered through two wrist surgeries to become one of the Hoyas' top defensive specialists, having her best season as a senior in 2006.

The Thomas Graham Scholar-Athlete Award will be presented to Ricky Schramm. The Thomas Francis Graham Award, presented at the discretion of the Dean of the College, was founded by the Graham Family in memory of their father, Thomas Francis Graham, CAS 1949. The honor of this award is bestowed upon a graduating senior of the College who has demonstrated throughout his/her college career concern for others, academic achievement, sportsmanship as a member of an intercollegiate team and dedication to the educational and spiritual goals of Georgetown University.

Schramm, an English and Spanish double major with a 3.04 GPA, led the Hoyas' soccer team in scoring in four straight seasons. He was named 2006 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Men's Division I All-Northeast Region Third Team and All-BIG EAST Second Team following his senior season while ranking third in the league with 10 goals and fourth in the conference with 24 points.

Schramm finished his Georgetown career tied for third on the school's all-time list with Raul Ferrer (1992-95) with 39 career goals. Schramm, a two-time team MVP, also concluded his career tied for fourth all-time with Tim Keegan (1990-94) with 93 career points. Schramm earned BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year accolades in in 2004 and All-BIG EAST third team honors in 2005.

LaMotte, as the Duffey Award recipient, will be recognized at the 21st annual Hoyas Unlimited Athletic Recognition Dinner that will be held in the fall.
