Norfolk, Va. - The Georgetown University women's tennis team, fell to Old Dominion 7-0 in the team's first dual match of the 2008 season on Friday afternoon at the Fowlkes-Stevens Indoor Tennis Center. The match drops the Hoyas to 0-1, before they travel to Syracuse, N.Y. for matches against BIG EAST Conference foes, Cincinnati and Syracuse.
The Hoyas' were swept in doubles play, 8-4 to surrender the point to the Monarchs. Freshmen Maxi Thiels (Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School) and Caroline Kuehn (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) saw their first dual-meet action, as did freshman Elizabeth Sullivan (Potomac, Md./National Cathedral School) who paired with senior Liz Winokur (West Palm Beach, Fla./Cardinal Newman).
Senior Stephanie Cohen (Fayetteville, N.Y./DeWitt) provided the blue and gray's lone set victory, taking the second set from Daniela Cohen, before eventually falling, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0(10-5) in the third singles position. From there the Monarchs shut-out GU to take the match, 7-0.
Following Friday's loss, Georgetown will travel to Syracuse, N.Y. for two more weekend matches. On Saturday the Hoyas' square off with Cincinnati at 1 p.m., before playing host Syracuse at 11 a.m. on Sunday morning.
