Hoyas Fall to American in Crosstown Matchup

Oct. 14, 2008

Box Score

Washington, D.C. - The No. RV/25 Georgetown University men's soccer squad suffered a 4-1 loss to the American University Eagles (5-5-2) Tuesday afternoon at Reeves Field. The Hoyas went ahead early but a penalty kick and quick red card made it a difficult contest for GU in the local rivalry. With the loss, Georgetown falls to 7-3-3 on the season.

The Hoyas started the game strong with a number of good looks at the net. Junior Mark Zeman (Western Springs, Ill./Lyons Twp.) had an early chance off of a free kick but the ball hit the bar keeping the game scoreless. In the 33rd minute, goalkeeper Mark Wilber (Tijeras, N.M./Albuquerque Acad.) made a pair of impressive saves as the Hoyas stepped it up on the defensive end. The teams went into the break tied 0-0 with Georgetown holding a 10-6 shot and 10-4 corner kick advantage in the rough game that had two cards given out in the first half.

In the 53rd minute, the Hoyas finally broke the dead heat with a goal from Scott Larrabee (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Loyola HS of LA). Midfielder Seth C'deBaca (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia Prep) had the ball on the right side and looked up to see Larrabee streaking down the left holding up just enough to stay onsides and make one move before getting to the keeper. AU goalkeeper, Matt Makowski, got a hand on the ball but it rolled into the net putting the Hoyas up one.

Unfortunately, that would be the final bit of good news for Georgetown as things began to unravel. A foul in the box in the 68th minute along with three GU yellow cards resulted in the equalizer off of the ensuing penalty kick. Just a minute later, a red card put the Hoyas a man down for the remainder of the game. Try as they might, the Hoyas just couldn't make up for the missing player and AU went on to score two more goals making the final 4-1.

Even with the loss and the man-down situation, Georgetown still outshot the Eagles 17-3 and once again held the advantage in corner kicks 10-6. Wilber had two saves in the game.

The Hoyas will return to BIG EAST action on Saturday as they travel to Pittsburgh for a 1 p.m., conference game against the Panthers.
